Some Apologies to Whole Foods Market (March 11, 2014)
For many years I have remarked on Whole Foods Market’s high prices for what appear to be ordinary processed foods. However, I recently found out that there are well over 70 commonly-used ingredients and manufacturing procedures that Whole Foods does not permit for anything sold in its stores -- things common enough in food manufacturing that almost half of all Walmart food products could not be sold at Whole Foods. So I stand corrected. If you are willing and able to pay an extra $2 for a box of crackers without high-fructose corn syrup, BHA, BHT, and heaven knows what else in it, more power to you, and also to Whole Foods for making those foods more widely available. (Although I’m still wondering why they charge $23.99 a pound for this one cheese that I used to get in Southern California at the local ethnic deli for $5.99 a pound...)
